Huawei’s ‘phablet’ takes off globally, doesn’t seem so crazy after all

China’s emergence as a global tech player is a continuing trend in consumer electronics, and the rise of China’s Huawei is a prime example.
The company wants to be a global brand in tech products and will continue to expand its presence in the U.S. market, Colin Giles, executive vice president at Huawei, told VentureBeat.
Last year, the company showed off a “phablet,” or phone-tablet that was widely ridiculed in the West. But it took off in Asian markets. And this year it was back with a new model that it will push in the U.S.
Huawei’s goal to become a global brand is not a crazy ambition. In 2012, it sold 32 million smartphones. In 2013, it sold 52 million. In 2014, it wants to sell 80 million.
“The average growth of our brand awareness in 30 countries was 100 percent, based on our surveys,” Giles said. “The U.S. is a very important market as a leader of trends. It will be an important market for our company as a trendsetter. But if you look for the growth, you have to look at Asia too.”
China’s presence was certainly huge at the 2014 International CES, the big tech trade show in Las Vegas, where I interviewed Giles. Steve Koenig, senior analyst for the Consumer Electronics Association, said at the show that China has finally eclipsed North America as the largest consumer electronics market in 2013. In smartphones, China has been the largest market for some time.
But North American tech sales are expected to be $257 billion in 2013, once the counting is finished. China’s region is expected to hit $282 billion. Emerging markets are now 50 percent of global tech sales, compared to 40 percent not long ago, Koenig said.
There are 160 cities in China that have more than 1 million people, compared to just nine in the U.S. China’s gross domestic product (GDP), expected to hit 7.4 percent in 2014, is also rising faster than North America’s.
The size of China and its reach was a lot more evident at CES this year than in the past. China’s HiSense occupied some prime convention space in the old Microsoft booth. It reminded me of the days when the Japanese consumer electronics giants dominated, and South Korea’s Samsung was a small upstart on the show floor.
Giles, a former Nokia executive, has spent about 20 years in China, and he joined Huawei six months ago because he believes now is a great time for Chinese companies and the quality of their products.
“Around the world, you’re seeing an acceptance of Asian brands,” Giles said. “Building the brand is important in every market, the U.S. as well as overseas. Being a Chinese company brings its unique set of challenges, and its set of opportunities too.”
Of the many cheap China smartphones and tablets that the company showed off at CES, the one that Huawei will push in the U.S. heavily is the Ascend Mate II, a “phablet,” or phone-tablet hybrid, with a 6.1-inch screen.
Last year, such phablets were so new that folks made fun of them as giant phones. But phablets have taken off in Asia. In fact, on Wednesday, Hewlett-Packard announced that it would launch an Android-based phablet in India.

Lenovo Unveils ThinkPad 8 Tablet

Lenovo has jumped into the CES fracus with an expected array of new ThinkPad notebooks and Yoga convertibles, but the Chinese firm has also thrown a new bone to the tablet world. It's announced the ThinkPad 8, an 8-inch Windows 8.1 slate aimed primarily at the business class.
Lenovo ThinkPad 8 More specifically, the ThinkPad 8 is going to sport an 8.3-inch, 1920 x 1200 resolution display -- one of the highest yet for a Windows 8 slate of this size -- a quad-core 2.4GHz Intel Atom chip, 2GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of storage. A 8-megapixel camera will be included on the back of the slate's black aluminum chassis, as are separate microSD, microUSB, and microHDMI ports.
The whole thing will weigh 0.92 pounds and measure in at 8.8mm thick, and Lenovo says it'll get 8 hours of battery life. An optional 'QuickShot Cover' can magnetically attach to the tablet, and Lenovo's added in a neat little trick that lets users quickly peel it back to access the main camera too.
Everyone from Toshiba to Acer to Dell have released 8-inch Windows Cheap Tablet PC over the last several months, but most of those devices have focused more on being affordable than being particularly powerful. The stylus support of last year's ThinkPad Tablet 2 is gone from Lenovo's upcoming version, but with its sexier design and comparatively impressive spec sheet, the ThinkPad 8 looks like it's striking a higher-end balance between quality and price.
The 32GB model will start at $400 when it launches later this month -- putting it in direct competition with the Apple iPad mini Retina -- though pricier configurations with more storage and 4G LTE connectivity will be out as well.
Lenovo is showing off the ThinkPad 8 at CES this week, so we'll be sure to add some impressions once we get our hands on the device.
In addition to this tablet, Lenova also unveiled the MIIX 2, a 2-in-1 laptop, as well as the Yoga 2 convertible.

Meizu MX3 leaked images surface with talk of specs

The Meizu MX2 went on sale for those in China last year. That model was a follow-up to the MX1 and keeping with the apparent naming tradition, it looks like details and images of the Meizu MX3 have surfaced. This isn’t the first time talk of the MX3 has surfaced, however this is the first time we are seeing clear crisp images of the front and back.
 Meizu MX3
Looking back to one of the earlier Meizu MX3 rumors and there was talk of the handset having an LED illuminated home button. Rumors have suggested this will be on the handset, and also that it will not be on the handset. As you can see from the image sitting above, there is indeed an illuminated home button showing.
This round of images also has the device measurements. In this case the width is 70.94mm, the height is 139.96mm and the thickness is 8mm. Those would translate to 2.79 x 5.51 x 0.31-inches. Other still unconfirmed specs for the MX3 include a 5.1-inch Full HD display and Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor.
The handset is also expected to have 2GB of RAM along with a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and internal storage options ranging from 32GB, to 64GB and topping out at 128GB. Finally, the handset is said to be running Flyme 3.0, which is actually a skinned version of Jelly Bean.
All of that having been said, we now have the disappointing news. Despite the good looks and interesting specs for the Meizu MX3 — it is a handset that many will likely never get a change to see or play with in real life. Simply put, like the previous Meizu handsets, this one will likely only see a release in China. Plus we also have the bit about these details being a leak and therefor unconfirmed.
